The University of Minnesota identifies “understanding diverse philosophies and cultures within and across societies” as a desired student learning outcome for all undergraduates. The CFANS Diversity Enriched Curriculum (DEC) offers departments a framework for intentionally developing and fostering undergraduate courses that incorporate the essential tools for achieving such an outcome: intercultural competence, including cultural awareness, non-judgmental examination, and critical thinking skills. 

A goal of DEC is to develop a curriculum that will be progressive or “spiral” such that key concepts are presented repeatedly throughout the curriculum and with deepening layers of complexity, or in different applications.
